I found The Last Descendant (Sanyare Chronicles #1) on Indie Brag, a site that showcases the best of Indie Authors. After reading the blurb, I added it to the TBR list. Here’s my review!Synopsis (from the author):Raised in a realm where humans are no better than slaves, Rie Lhethannien has struggled for decades to earn a meager post in the High Court messenger service. Even training as an elite fighter isn’t enough to earn the respect she craves. Scorned by the high elves who rely on her loyalty, Rie’s closest allies are the fierce carnivorous pixies who travel by her side. When she’s attacked on a routine delivery by assassins from the enemy Shadow Realm, Rie’s martial prowess keeps her alive…and frames her as a traitor. Facing execution at the hand of an unmerciful high elf king, Rie must forsake her oaths and flee into enemy lands to prove her innocence. The secrets she uncovers may threaten more than her honor or even her life...for war is looming in the nine faerie realms. What I liked:The Last Descendant has all the great fantasy elements. Rie, a human coming into unknown powers, intrigue, battles, magic, elves, a forbidden realm, and a quest to uncover the truth. What more can a fantasy reader ask for? In addition, it’s a well-written and well-paced book. Fantasy lovers a series to keep them occupied. Well done, Megan Haskell! What I didn’t like:I’m not asking for an info dump, but more background on the Shadow Realm would help. I’m sure it comes out in the subsequent books, though, so I’ll have to wait.Overall impression:As with all the books I’ve read with Indie Brag Medallions, The Last Descendant (Sanyare Chronicles #1) is well-written and entertaining! Good characters, nice battles scenes, intrigue, and a touch of romance make it a book worth reading! I recommend this one to anyone who likes fantasy! My rating:5 Stars

What fun! It's exactly what the cover promises -- a kickass heroine is put in a deadly dilemma and must risk everything to clear her name. This leads her on a mission into the Lower Realm (dark elves! blood sidhe!), which is both terrifying and not at all what the Upper Realm elves told her. She's not sure what she's doing, and yep, she makes mistakes, but she also meets allies along the way, and learns some secrets about herself, as well. What starts out as investigating a single attack leads to her uncovering a bigger plot afoot, and Rie is in the middle of it, whether she likes it or not. What a great adventure! Plus there are bloodthirsty pixies! I kept reading "one more chapter" until I was done with the book, and then my first thought was that I couldn't wait to read book 2, to see what happens next! The book is called "dark fantasy" but it's clear that people vary in their definitions of that. The story didn't have the disturbing, morally questionable, psychologically damaged, or horror elements that I associate with dark fantasy. Sure, the bad guys are evil, and the good guys make poor choices sometimes, but they stay good guys, and evil exists to be conquered, not embraced. Just the way I like it!I rate books within their "weight class," as it were, rather than comparing every book to Hugo winners. This is one of those indie books that will defy any of your lowered expectations of independent publishing. The writing is fast, clean, and engaging, and the book (I bought the paperback) is beautiful inside and out; it's 100% professional, through and through. It's especially impressive for a new novelist. I can't wait to see what Haskell does when her style refines and matures even further.I'd recommend this book for anyone who likes a good, solid fantasy adventure. Having read ahead to the later books already, I can say that yes, it's worth diving into the whole series, and the quality keeps up all the way through!

Interesting storyline with some good detail but a bit too young-adult for my taste, especially the romance stuffBought the series on a hunch but gave up at end of first book.

This is simply a road map. While it may show "points of interest," it certainly is not "hundreds" of them. And what it does show is only the spot, no information about these points at all - just a spot on a map. There is also no directory for these "points of interest" telling you where to find them on the map. And, the road map is even difficult to read, as the cut off between front and back is between Bergen (South) and Norway (North). These are the most popular destinations in Norway and the main roads between them are on two separate sides of the map. The map we got from AAA was much better, and the Lonely Planet guide is outstanding when compared to this.

This map is excellent for overall planning for your trip, answering questions like “is that a 50 mile drive or a 500 mile drive?”, is tear- and water-resistant, and up to the high visual-quality standards of NG and Michelin. However at 15 miles per inch, you are not going to get much help for driving on little country roads... and this year we still haven’t figured out reasonable roaming charges for running google maps in real time on your cellphone, although the EU is moving in this direction. Anyway google maps has always been better at finding urban pizza places as opposed to rural landscape features, and you can’t count on a nearby cellphone tower when you are really out deep in the countryside...I am writing a somewhat more general review here because I see a lot of readers are looking for help planning to drive around, maybe some advice. For travel in Norway, a much more detailed complement to this NG low-resolution map is the annual, big, red, spiral-bound, expensive “Stort bilatlas Norge” (that’s Big CarAtlas Norway), published by Cappelen Damm— maybe buy it in Norway but I found it was a lot of help to get it in advance. Don’t worry, it has titles in German and English, but you really need Norwegian too if you want to read local signs. As of the time I’m writing this review, Amazon USA doesn’t carry this atlas, but maybe this review will help change their mind, I hope. At roughly three times the resolution of the NG map of this review, it has nine times as much area coverage, also good city-maps and gazetteer, is quite legible. Don’t settle for last year’s copy because Norway is constantly constructing new tunnels and bridges, e.g., to wonderful, obscure little islands. There are still a lot of ferrries that play the role of bridges on major roads, so patience is encouraged. Even though it’s expensive to rent a car in Norway, you might consider doing this at several ports serviced by (the) HurtigRutEn, just like the people who get off and on the Alaska Ferries. You might also find bargains on the far-north local airlines, or consider a (gorgeous) rail connection to Narvik from Sweden’s InlandsBanEn. At latitudes like Prudhoe Bay (snowmobile country in the USA/Canada), Norway has through-roads, restaurants, cellphones, car rentals, farmers who are gathering in the first hay at the end of May just like in Vermont (oh, well, they also have herds of reindeer with numbers painted on them, not a typical Vermont feature). Oh and a terrific university bookstore in Tromso. Beware midges, like in Scotland. Well, I guess this NG map doesn’t extend that far north, but don’t let that stop you from Dreaming. Be warned, also, that north of the Arctic Circle, roads are generally small-sized, windy, slow going, i.e. more tiring driving. But anyway the word “Adventure” in the title of this map does conjure up some adventuring in the beautiful Scandinavian countryside, it will help you start to get there, and I hope you have a wonderful time traveling around.

point 1: You would think that the #3301 map (this one) and the #3300 map (northern Scandinavia) would match up. They don't. The National Geographic layout designer chose to put the city index on the spot where the two would come together, leaving a good hundred miles that are not covered by either map.point 2: this map (as well as #3300) are much less thorough about attractions on the map than their other Europe maps. It's really rather skimpy.point 3: I used the map to follow a road that was clearly shown to be continuous on the map, but it turned out to be non-existent after driving fifty miles. No road. It looks like the cartographer just drew a squiggly line on the map and figured that was good enough. But, there's no road between Ljungdalen and Funasdalen even though you could probably do the trip on a series of unpaved tracks that still don't match up with what is shown on the map.point 4: It's a quality map that is (mostly) waterproof and easy to read.

Not as expected. This is merely a road map. Any adventure destinations are hard to distinguish and not emphasized as I would expect in an map advertised as an "adventure map". Why not shaded relief??

We used (and needed) a GPS to find the local addresses of the AirBnB places we stayed, but this paper map was necessary to plot overland routes and identify points of interest, such as the stave churches, that we wanted to see. Great for planning, great during driving. And no matter what they say (truly) about the spectacular fjords, they pale when compared to the scenery you see when driving.

I wanted to get a durable and accurate map for my sons when they were driving through Scandinavia and this was perfect. It was of good quality and had all of the needed information. I highly recommend this and other Nat Geo maps.

Planning a visit in July. Just what I needed.

Very useful tool as we drove around southern Sweden & Norway. Even though we had a GPS we used the map a lot to find spots of interest including an interesting heritage sight with age-old petroglyphs.

Mother's Day is not a joyful occasion for all women, particularly those who would like to have children but cannot. Marlo Schalesky's Empty Womb, Aching Heart: Hope and Help for Those Struggling with Infertility does for Christian women what Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin's Tears of Sorrow, Seeds of Hope: A Jewish Spiritual Companion for Infertility and Pregnancy Loss did for Jewish women: provide comfort and camaraderie in the face of infertility and pregnancy loss. Purchased in a moment of desperation and longing for support from others who understand the journey of infertility, this book sat on my kindle for a while before I started reading it. I eventually came to feel God urging me, strongly calling out to me, nagging at my heart to just READ. THE. BOOK. So I did, and I am so, so glad. Each tale tells a different story, touching on the countless nuances and emotions of infertility. Not all stories end as we hope ours will -- in pregnancy -- but all do conclude with the narrator experiencing a deep message about God's love and purpose for their life, that "aha" moment, if you will. I also took away bits of advice from reading this book that I already have put into practice. I don't know where my infertility journey will go from here, but I feel so grateful for the spiritual growth, affirmation and comfort I experienced as a result of reading these stories.

The book was more faith based than I expected. The first half was still helpful for me and I'm glad I read it. The second half was much more faith based and so for me...not as helpful. But I did appreciate that there were stories from the man's perspective as well. We tend to forget it might be hard for them too. Overall, I'd recommend it.

For someone suffering with infertility, I was looking for anything and everything to help me cope with the fact that I will likely never have a child of my own. This book was the perfect read. It was full of stories and life lessons on how others have coped with their own infertility. The words in this book have helped me to learn to deal with the things that I am going through. It is good to hear advice from people who are or have gone through similar things. The words in this book have helped me in ways that one could not imagine.

We waited for 9 years for children. Praying. Waiting. Hurting. Waiting. Much of our identity was lost in the barrenness. This book was a life-changer. We got it year six, and wished we had year one. It answered and a lot of questions. The Lord used it to help us understand that we are a family with or without children. We didn't have to wait on life because we were waiting on children. We bought this for a couple who wears the shoes we wore for 9 years. We know the Lord will use it greatly in their life to meet some needs only the barren can understand.

Someone I had just met recommended this book to me. I downloaded a sample and was hooked! Finally, here was something supportive for people suffering through infertility. I was in a dark place after 4 years of not being able to get pregnant, and this book made me feel connected with people who shared the same feelings, hopes, and dreams as me. This book has also strengthened my relationship with God, and for that I will be forever grateful! I bought a copy of this book for my friend, who is also struggling through infertility and recommended it to my OBGYN! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this book!

This is an excellent book for those struggling with infertility or miscarriages. It is also a good one to read for those who want to understand what others may be going through. It is well written, in a way that holds the interest of the reader, with short stories woven in here and there. I have found this to be my favorite as a gift for friends who are struggling with issues we struggled with at one time.

This book showed me I wasn't alone. This was the only book I read about infertility that actually made me feel like there were other people out there like me. It doesn't try to give you quick fixes for infertility (because there are none), it isn't a science or a medical book. It is a book that touches the human heart. I sobbed through most of the book because every single story in this book resonated with me. They are all true. About real men and women. And they all touched my heart.

This book is not for the faint hearted. These are real people with their hearts and lives exposed. They do show how they found peace and what that looked like for them but you will still need a box of tissues on standby if you aren't made of stone, and certainly if like me you have had any kind of brush with the reality of infertility, and mine was but a glancing brush compared to most of these stories you will ache with these wonderful couples as they take you on their journey. If you are having infertility issues it does help you to know that you aren't the only one in the world and that may be of some comfort to you but this book is not a book of easy answers to hard questions. Some of the hard questions will remain but there is a glimmer of hope and peace.

Review

“This could have been a memoir about loss, and a mother's grief. It would have been natural and understandable, given that her son, Parker Bradford, died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of eighteen. Any parent brave enough to try to imagine that loss would have forgiven Melissa Dalton Bradford for being unable to write from any other point of view than that of sorrow.   Moreover, I have no doubt that book would also have been worth reading, since Melissa Dalton-Bradford writes very well.  Instead, here is a rich, frank and funny book in which the essentials of family and friendship and community are combined with interesting travelogue and the best kind of spiritual writing. In short, this is a book about love.""  —Kate Braestrup, New York Times best-selling author of Here If You Need Me ""After twenty years and eight  different international relocations for her husband’s career,  Melissa Dalton-Bradford has much to offer on how ordinary family moments can create an extraordinary family journey when you mix countries and cultures.  Global Mom:  A Memoir is a brilliant hero’s journey highlighting the challenges and triumphs of motherhood under unique cross-cultural circumstances.  With honesty, sensitivity, and humor, Dalton-Bradford is a role model for all parents who will be relocating with children, especially those who will relocate for their spouse’s career."" --Paula Caligiuri, P.h.D., author Cultural Agility:  Building a Pipeline of Successful Global Professionals Global Mom provides an honest and poignant look at the unique challenges of raising a family across multiple cultures. This is not an ordinary memoir of a globe-trotting family. Perhaps because of the tragedy the family faces, this memoir achieves a depth and weightiness that sets it apart from other titles in the genre. As a former globe-trotting mother myself, I felt a kinship with Dalton-Bradford. She is warm and personable, making you feel you could dash off an email to her in response to a passage and have a meaningful conversation about it.Melissa Dalton-Bradford does an admirable job of distilling years of experiences into a few pages covering critical ex-pat experiences like daycare, international and local schools, culture clashes, language acquisition, bureaucracy, navigating medical systems and pharmacies, food, giving birth, friendship, job transfers, etc. She writes of these things with small anecdotes, often hilarious, but always insightful and cohesive.Dalton-Bradford articulates far more deftly than I have ever been able to express the wonder and privilege of such a globe-trotting lifestyle. She does not, however, gloss over the real costs of the same lifestyle--the rootlessness, the relentless loss, and the curious experience of feeling a stranger in one's own country.Perhaps the greatest feat of the book is how the heaviest and most painful of topics-the death of the Bradford's eldest son just days after beginning university-is integrated into the narrative without being choppy or derailing the book. Indeed the candor and dignity with which Dalton-Bradford expresses her grief and the struggle to move forward in such a painful landscape (almost like an entirely new country) was deeply and profoundly moving.I found the typos in the original edition distracting and frustrating--though I think a new edition has been printed and I believe that it has been better proof-read. While Bradford's prose is beautiful and elegant, I found it distracting at times-causing me to lose track of the story. I loved the foreign phrases which were scattered throughout the text, but they weren't always translated which made me feel like an outsider and missing critical parts of the text. Many of the chapter titles were foreign phrases and I think a translation should have been provided as well underneath the title. I also wish the chapters about Singapore and Asia had been expanded. That section of the book felt too cursory and brief.Who should read this book? People who want to travel or have ever wondered what it is like to actually live in a foreign country. People who are preparing for an international move. Expat families who are looking for sources to help validate their experiences. Anyone who is coping with grief would also benefit from this book. I will be sharing this book with my family to help them gain a deeper understanding of my own experiences living in three different foreign countries for 7 years.

Get cozy with tissue. This book will envelop you. You will wish you lived her life abroad with her family. It is a very refreshing take on the global culture of parenting and what makes each individual mother strong across the globe. I fell in love with Melissa and her family and believe she has an even strong message ahead of her. You will love this book. It tugs at your heart and leaves you with a stronger sense of the importance of parenting and the effect one family has on the world.

Waiting for the perfect moment to immerse myself in it, I knew I would love this book…for Melissa’s story parallels my story at some point. But I did not realize how much I would glean and grow from her gifted ability to rein the reader into her international world. I hungered for more as each page flew beneath my fingers, and even more as she described the experiences of tasting all the delicacies the world palate has to offer. Knowing the ending before I started…Melissa still beautifully moved me with her masterful portrayal of living joyfully with the unexpected realities life brings. You don’t have to be a global mom or even any kind of a mom to thoroughly love this book.

Global Mom: A Memoir is a book about identity and what it means to negotiate the sometimes competing influences of career, marriage, motherhood and ultimately self across cultural, ethnic and national boundaries. Global Mom traces Melissa Dalton-Bradford's journey as she seeks to find a place in several different societies, while building a family.Through anecdotes and insights, this book shares the values that help form the Bradford family as they are amplified by, and sometimes (humorously) collide with, local cultures. These stories, sometimes witty and sometimes poignant, convey the interplay between their family and the deep-rooted cultural values of the societies they negotiate. They also tell of the different ways societies have of bringing people together, both to celebrate life and to mourn loss. Even the act of entering and beginning to work within a new culture is an act of community. Dalton-Bradford writes of her experience in Norway, "It assumes commitment and consistency on the part of both the newcomer as well as the native community at large."She also writes of personal insights such as tender moments with children, "There are those minutes in life, which you ache to redo or even, if by magic, somehow inhabit again." Repeatedly, she and her family are plunged into different settings with different languages and different rules--each of which could either be just a brief stay or a permanent move. During a short relocation back in the USA she reveals, "I ached for a place where we could be who we all had been individually and as a family, for that special roughness and refinement of a vibrantly textured international setting."Global Mom is for those venturing into living abroad or learning from one who has, but it is also for those who enjoy humor and irony in changing life circumstances and who want to gain a deeper understanding of self through encountering that which is foreign.

Pat Davis does a good job with an overview of the rules of badminton. You get a brief history, racquet, shuttle, court and scoring information, faults and even a chapter on officials. There are some weaknesses: The wording in the scoring section left me wondering who could do what when the score was tied at 14. The diagrams are in meters with approximate English measurements - the width of the court comes out a foot too narrow. Despite the minor faults, this book will let the reader understand the basic rules of badminton.

Made it easier to understand the rules.
