I first encountered Ladin's poetry - then read articles on many things - including her perception of her relationship to the Creator. The book is personal and honest. She is refreshingly non-dogmatic in an intersection that most of us navigate defensively or dogmatically. Her ideas are clear and fresh, and well researched. It could be a difficult read for anyone without some knowledge of Torah aka "the Old Testament" - but if you know who Abraham is, and have passing familiarity with the Genesis stories - this will not be a problem.

The genius of _The Soul of the Stanger_ is that by reading Torah from her distinct and extraordinarily specific perspective ́Joy Ladin is able to pinpoint with surgical precision details of universal relevance to every person’s relationship with God. The book is deeply grounded in the author’s ongoing personal relationship with God, from childhood until now, and so it never veers off from the core message.This is an important book because Ladin dares to theologize. There are many books about Torah that give insights about the text. Far fewer give insights about God. She insists that we delve into Torah with an honest look at how God relates to people and vice versa. As a result, her personal story encourages us to recognize how the content of Torah illuminates for each of us how we relate to God.Ladin’s approach is surprisingly traditional. She does not try to read modern sensibilities into the text, and so does not try to whitewash the reality that the Torah as written is indeed patriarchal and bound by the gender binary. As Jewish commentators have done since the Torah was written, though, she allows the text to speak to our contemporary situation in ways that are meaningful and new.The author is a well-regarded poet, and so it is not surprising that she expresses herself with words that resonate and invite us to bring to her discussion and to the text the breadth of our human experience. She is also an educator, and her craft is evident throughout as she brings diverse sources together for us with sufficient guidance to help us reach our own insights as well as understand her own.I recommend this book.[Full disclosure: I am personally acquainted with Joy. I have not discussed with her this review noor my intent to write a review.]
