This is a wonderful collection of great southwestern recipes that work. The author Mark Miller has introduced Cajun and Creole elements into many of his recipes making them unique without sacrificing the southwestern charachter of the dishes presented. Each and every dish is definately worthy of calling itself southwestern.Definately comprehensive this book covers with a plethora of recipes in 10 chapters anything you may be looking for to fill your southwestern Table. The chapters covered are: cocktails, salsas, sauces and soups, appetizers and salads, Tamales, seafood and fish, game and fowl, meat, desserts and breads and what the author refers to as his bag of tricks which is an assortment of staple dishes that you will find in just about any tex-mex restaurant.Particularly useful to me I found the Tamales chapter which apart from some basic principles on preparing tamales, includes 16 different recipes. On the negative side, I found the book very difficult to use as the print of the recipes is extremely small. As I am over 40 and my eyesight is not what it was 20 years ago, I have had to scan and enlarge the recipes that I have used in order to use them. Other than that this is a good buy and a good addition to your cookbook library!

This is a great cookbook with a good mix of easy recipes and others that involve a lot more preparationand esoteric ingredients. I was afraid that most of the recipes would have ingredients that arenot easily obtained (such as wild boar bacon), but it is usually easy to find an acceptable substitute.I would say that most of the core recipes contain ingredients that can be found without too mucheffort. As someone who does not have a lot of experience with this type of cuisine, I enjoyed theclear explanations and detailed description of the ingredients found at the end of the book.

Mark Miller is one of my favorite chefs...Coyote Cafe was one my favorite restaurants in Santa Fe...too bad Mark is not still active

I had one of these as a gift, that was stolen, so I ordered another. Best recipes, which I do not routinely follow, but they give me a starting point. Highly recommended..

Purchased as a gift for DH. He LOVES it! Great item and fast shipping.

Mark Miller is the king of chiles. I wish I could've eaten at the Coyote Cafe when Chef Miller was there.

Great cookbook, I gave it as a gift and the recipient loves it.

Great book!

Review

“Bestseller Berry’s 13th thriller featuring U.S. government operative Cotton Malone (after 2017’s The Lost Order) is an effective conspiracy yarn centered on Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Berry makes Malone accessible to newcomers by presenting his numerous rookie mistakes as a field operative, but the anticlimactic reveal may disappoint some readers.”-Publishers Weekly“A compelling historical mystery with a terrific payoff.”―Associated Press “As fast-paced and exciting as all his previous books, this is another winner in the author’s best-selling series. Berry’s fans will not be disappointed. He has a knack for presenting alternative history that seems as though it might be true.” – Library Journal, starred review“It took him a while―a dozen books―to get around to it, but Berry has finally written Cotton Malone’s origin story… [an] exciting tale of historical intrigue” – Booklist“Berry has always ‘hit it out of the park’ with his books; with this, he’s basically hit it to the moon and back. It is that good. Berry is outstanding, taking people on a hunt through the past that brings even more suspense to a crime that has never been forgotten.” –Suspense Magazine“This Cotton Malone case is a fast-paced, heart-pounding thriller with dark corners and passaiewgeways. The action hits the ground running and does not let up until the end. Steve Berry is a talented author who shakes things up by presenting alternate versions to historical events.” – RT Book Reviews“Berry mixes historical facts with his own fictions in a manner that readers of this terrific series have come to love. The Bishop’s Pawn…keeps the suspense building until the final pages. It’s one of the best books in a wonderful series.” – Connecticut Post“Berry doesn’t so much as up the ante here as change the game. And the result is a tour de force that’s everything a great thriller is supposed to be.” – Providence Journal“Berry deftly weaves historical facts and made-up fiction.” – Florida Times Union“A riveting adventure told in Berry’s trademark style of pairing meticulously researched history with unexpected twists.” – Southern Seasons

I really wanted to like this book and there are parts of it I did. A feasible theory based on a real person - a controversial, charismatic, flawed man who made a difference and became a martyr by being assassinated. Was this a carefully thought out and orchestrated killing engineered by the powers that be or by the man himself? Fascinating premise wound into a novel by an author who does it so well.....just not this time. Somehow it just misses...it seemed to drag in so many places I would lose interest which is unusual in a Steve Berry story.

For fans of the previous twelve Cotton Malone novels, by author Steve Berry, his most recent novel “The Bishop’s Pawn”, takes the reader back eighteen years when Stephanie Nelle plucked Cotton from his navy legal position to take on an assignment for the Justice Department. This was not a normal assignment and within 48 hours Cotton had earned his spurs that would make him eventually the first recruit in the secretive Magellan Billet of the Justice Department.History has still not fully shown the possible role of J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI in the murder of Martin Luther King on that dark April day in Memphis in 1968. A former operative of both the FBI & CIA, who lives in Cuba, has files accounting for the role of the FBI in the murder and he is willing to exchange them for a 1933 Double Eagle, the most valuable coin in the world. One of Martin Luther King’s lieutenants has such a coin, although how he happened to have it, is a mystery.Cotton’s boss, Stephanie Nelle, learns of the planned exchange of the Double Eagle for the files, which are now on a sunken ship in the Dry Tortugas, and sends Cotton to retrieve the files before the ex-operative from Cuba can retrieve them from the sunken ship. As it turns out, there are several retired FBI agents who worked for Hoover, that do not what their roles in the MLK murder known. They will do anything to get those files. The fireworks, as in all Cotton Malone novels, thus begins with fury. This story is a combination of novel and fact, and at times it was a case of which is fact and which is not. Considering that it is fifty years this month since MLK was murdered, it was important to have an iPad nearby for constant googling, as this reader’s memory was somewhat faded from that era. Finally, as one returns to 2018, it is curious that there continues to be mysteries within the FBI, both from Hoover’s days to the current political days, that hopefully will eventually made known.

Just gave up on it. One long chase from one lucky escape to another. Skipped lots to return to the plot but couldn't finish. Agree with the comments in the 2 star group.

The Bishop's Pawn by Steve Berry Cotton Malone #13As Mr. Berry tells us: "The idea for this book has swirled around my head for more than a decade, but I delayed its writing until 2018 and the fiftieth anniversary of the King assassination." It's amazing that it's been that long since Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination and we still are as ignorant of what happened as we were then. Most likely we'll never know the truth. That said, I find Mr.Berry's interpretation of the events that lead to MLK's death quite interesting, and probably raise more questions than it answers. One thing I do believe, his death gave an ulterior meaning to MLK's life. Mr. Berry's take is a blend of facts and fiction, something that makes it quite interesting and I found it to be appropriate to remember MLK's life.Narrated from the first person point of view, it showcases Cotton Malone's first mission as a member of the Magellan Billet. This is Berry's first take on that point of view and I did not care as much for it. Would have loved it better if he has used several points of view as he always had in the past.Nonetheless, I felt it was a good way to pay tribute to MLK's legacy!

I have been reading Berry's novels for years and they usually get a 4 or 5 star rating from me. Not so in this case.In my opinion the plot does not make sense - that the Rev. Martin Luther King would place one of his trusted aids in a position to become at his (King’s) request an FBI informer and then have said informer suggest (at King's direction) that they, the FBI, should arrange the assassination of King himself to make him a martyr and "save the Civil Rights Movement” - come on now - that just strains one's ability to suspend reality while reading a novel.Berry tells this story as a prequel to his Cotton Malone series - taking us back to the year 2000 when Cotton was first recruited by Nelle. In this time frame he becomes aware of the MLK plots. These types of prequels rarely work, and this is not exception. My guess would be that after Perry came up with this plot, he figured to insert it into the Cotton Malone series to get an assured purchaser base. Well, this book does not fit in with the series and it can be skipped as far as I am concerned. I doubt, if any references are made to it in future Cotton Malone novels.Perry takes all of the "obligatory", after the fact stabs, at the FBI under Hoover, as required in, today's literary environment. In most of Perry's books, he changes the perspective around to give the reader multiple views of what is going on and what the various characters are thinking. Not so, in this novel - he sticks with one viewpoint - that of Cotton Malone. A mistake in my opinion.Usually Perry does a decent job of research - however, that seems to be lacking in this novel - an example is shown from page 178 "J. Edgar Hoover thought himself a master of the intelligence business. Before 1947 he was with the CIA and did a good job rooting out Nazi spies in World War Two". As point of fact Hoover started with the Justice Department in 1919 and became the head of the Bureau of Investigation in 1924, which later became the FBI – He spent his entire career there at Justice. Also, no one could have been with CIA "before 1947" as that was the year CIA was created. Sloppy research.
