Amazon.com Review

In 1955-56, the Peanuts gang may have still been in first grade (or lower), but the characters continue to grow into their distinctive and unmistakable personalities. Snoopy overcomes some embarrassment to reveal his talent for impressions (wolf, rhino, alligator, kangaroo, Violet, etc.) and his joyous dance-the-day-away attitude. Linus adopts the same attitude ("Five hundred years from now, who'll know the difference?") and continues to show his genius in such diverse activities as square balloons, snow sculptures, and air sketches, even though he has to resort to wishful violence against his bullying sister. Lucy, now a ripe old 4, has to face such concerns as the Earth being worn down by people's feet and whether Santa exists. And already concerned about getting married, she tries to divert Schroeder's attention from Beethoven either by logic (what's the sense in learning Beethoven sonatas if you don't win a prize?), by sympathy ("My favorite piece is Bach's Toccata and Fugue in Asia Minor"), or by violence, and pulls away the football from Charlie Brown for the first time (December 1956). She also teaches her brother "little-known facts" about the world (palm trees were so named because people can fit their hand around them), which gives Charlie Brown stomach aches and formed part of the stage musical You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. But she'll never lose an argument as long as she can end it with a well-placed insult. Such is the misery of Charlie Brown, who also has to endure his failure to fly a kite, his complete failure on the baseball diamond, and misery during any holiday. That he does endure, however, makes him one of the heroes of our time. The third volume of Fantagraphics Books' handsome Complete Peanuts series includes a foreword by Matt Groening and a Charles M. Schulz retrospective by Gary Groth. --David Horiuchi

From Booklist

The uniform hardcover series reprinting all 50 years of the classic comic strip Peanuts continues. Many ingredients that would sustain the strip for a half-century are already in place, from Linus' dependence on his security blanket to Schroeder's rejection of Lucy in favor of Beethoven to Snoopy's efforts to impersonate other species. A few elements on view in this third volume in the series would soon vanish, however, such as Charlie Brown's loudmouthed counterpart, Charlotte Braun. On the other hand, a long-lasting device debuts when Lucy first snatches the football from Charlie Brown's impending kick. Only a few topical references--coonskin caps, Willie Mays, Howdy Doody--betray these strips' age. As Simpsons creator Matt Groening points out in the introduction, "there was nothing cutesy or condescending about the Peanuts gang." These early strips show that as well as timeless humor, it is such melancholic aspects as natural-born fussbudget Lucy's bitterness and Charlie Brown's frustrations over baseball, kites, valentines, and just about everything else he attempts that make them resound to this day. Schulz is a master so he earns five stars by default but there are some things you should know...* These are sadly all black and white, even the Sundays that were printed in color. Luckily, there is a second series of books that contains all the full-color Sundays. Just search for 'Peanuts Every Sunday'* Each volume contains a brief introduction by some famous fan of the strip. They're vaguely interesting but I've never bothered to read any of them all the way through.* If you're crazy anal as I am note that there are two slightly different versions. If you want them all to match on your shelf then take VERY careful note of the exact publisher and edition.* Finally, take careful note of the evolution of the series. The very early strips from the 50s are almost like a totally different strip. If buying for a gift, you might consider one of the later books in the series. Completists will want them all but if the receiver is on the fence then the 50s isn't the place to start.

First, 5 stars for these years of Peanuts. Wonderful stuff. In print, these Fantagraphics editions are a joy. However, on a Kindle Keyboard (using the default reading mode), the art is fuzzy. It's perfectly readable, but not sharp. The fuzziness can be fixed on the daily strips if you don't mind the inconvenience of switching from "fit-to-screen" to "actual size." The "actual size" panels are sharp because they're meant to be shown at half the size of the screen. The inconvenience of this solution comes with the Sunday comics, where "actual size" cuts off the right side of every first panel. Shall I switch back to "fit-to-screen" for one panel, and interrupt my reading? Arrgh — fuzziness! Yet if I switch to "actual size," the other panels of the Sunday strips are still fuzzy. Sigh.I'm disappointed that the Kindle version is not more crisp — I bought this in order to study and enjoy each panel of Charles Schulz's work closely. However, I'm very glad to have such a portable and complete edition of Peanuts. Hence, 3 stars: an okay edition that I hope is improved someday.(On a side note about Kindle comics, it annoys me that I can't use bookmarks. In a comic like this with hundreds of pages, bookmarks would be very welcome.)

When I read the comics page in the newspaper, I find some good strips and some bad ones. Often the most annoying are what I call "institutional" strips: they haven't been funny in years or even decades, but they've become institutions and no one is willing to get rid of them. Peanuts, however, was always something of an exception: it was an institution, but it remained decent, even if in later years it was not quite the same caliber as it once was. There's a reason that modern comic artists (for example, Matt Groening in this volume) write glowingly about Peanuts; it was good. I doubt there is similar appreciation for Marmaduke, Heathcliff or Momma. The comic strips in this volume are fifty years old, yet with limited exceptions (such as references to Davy Crockett hats), they fit just as well today. Some of the characters have disappeared over the years: what every happened to Patty, Violet or Shermy (or the loud-talking Charlotte Braun)? Other characters have yet to appear, significantly Peppermint Patty, Woodstock and Sally. But the core characters are here in this book, with their identities still evolving.Snoopy is beginning to develop his alternate identities, practicing with being various animals (pythons, alligators, etc.) which will (in future volumes) develop into full-blown alternate personalities such as Joe Cool and the World War I Flying Ace ("Curse you, Red Baron!"). Lucy is a world-class fussbudget filled with incorrect information that she loves to impart to others. Linus still has his bursts of childishness, but is showing the signs of his budding genius, able to erect massive snow forts and blow up square balloons. In the end, however, it is Charlie Brown who is the centerpiece of this comic, the ultimate hard luck character who the world seems to conspire against; the other kids often treat him poorly and even things like kite-flying go awry when he does it. It is the Lucy-Charlie Brown relationship that causes the most aggravation for our hero; a typical series of strips will have Lucy debating an issue with him and instantly changing the subject as soon as she is proven wrong.Deceptively simple in their presentation, the Peanuts strips actually is filled with dark humor and angst. Yes, the only characters are kids (and a dog), but Schulz never relies on cuteness. Both fun and funny, this is a worthwhile read for both children and adults.

I love the Peanuts and early Snoopy is dope. Schulz expresses so much in so few lines, it's nicely abstracted and iconic, and the stories are nearly always entertaining and funny... although dated just as often as they aren't. Plus it's a more interesting way to while away the otherwise idle minute than watching cat videos...

Stay away from Vol. 3 on Kindle. It's heavily cropped and can't be viewed in landscape (the portrait mode is just shrunk to fit landscape vertically, making it even smaller and illegible?!). I'm so dissapointed in this after enjoying the first two volumes in landscape mode, which was very comfortable. I don't understand why the publisher would change the formatting to this. I won't be buying anymore of these on Kindle for fear of the same issue. $20 wasted.

If you are interested in France and pictures of crumbling plaster, gardens, cemeteries, and old buildings, then you will enjoy this book. If you are interested in close-up and long shot pictures of cats in their natural environment, then you will enjoy this book. If you are interested in both France and cats then you will love this book. Large and small photographs of French villages, with and without cats, fill this book. Cats, doing their thing, poetry, remarks from the photographer and information about some of the lovely photographed cats themselves, also fill this book. There is even a two page copy of PUSS IN BOOTS, by Charles Perrault, included in this beautiful book. Rachael Hale has taken her camera out of the studio and into the world of French Village cats and I am happy that she did.

This book just makes me happy. It captures some of my favorite subjects (Provence and cats) in the most beautiful way. From the layout, the paper quality, to the printing, the details of this book are incredible and nothing was overlooked. There's a large image of a misty landscape which alone was printed on a matte surface because a glossier paper would have been distracting and would not have correctly captured the soft light-filled mist in the photo. I took notice of all the little details that were carefully thought out, and I was so impressed!

This is a lovely book! Rachael Hale McKenna is a wonderful photographer and this is a book you can look at over and over again, noticing something new each time. If you love cats and all things French, then this is a good book for you, and would also make a nice gift for the cat lovers you know. I found out about this book because a friend sent the The French Dog first. Both well worth purchasing! Cheers to Ms. McKenna!

What a beautiful book. It makes a perfect present for a Francophile or a cat-lover (or ideally a cat loving Francophile). It probably especially makes a perfect present if you give it away instead of keeping it for yourself (sorry not sorry). It’s a coffee table book, so it’s not a riveting read, but so lovely to look at, with such a charming premise and perception, it makes a cozy half an hour whenever I look through it.

What a lovely book, ah to be a cat in Paris. I decided to buy this book for a friend for Christmas and realized that I should have one as well. It is beautifully done with wonderful quotes about cats. My friend said that she and all of her sisters enjoyed seeing this wonderful book. Enjoy!

This is my second time to purchase this book as a gift for a cat lover. Both of my friends loved it so much. I love all the stories behind the photos. I have several of this photographers books, and they are all nice, but this one def has the most words, which was a nice surprise.

"I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become it's visible soul."- Jean Cocteau..The French Cat by Rachael Hale is a great picture book to see cats in their element. Her photography captures so many good moments.

This book could change your life. Or not. I don't know. But it looks really good on a coffee table and the women love it. It should include a warning to single women though as owning anything more than 2 cats will scare most men away.

Review

“Wise and somber. . .Sontag's closing words acknowledge that there are realities which no picture can convey.” ―Los Angeles Times Book Review“The history of sensibility in a culture shaped by the mechanical reproduction of imagery....has always been one of the guiding preoccupations of her best work, from Against Interpretation to The Volcano Lover....Regarding the Pain of Others invites, and rewards, more than one reading.” ―Newsday“For 30 years, Susan Sontag has been challenging an entire generation to think about the things that frighten us most: war, disease, death. Her books illuminate without simplifying, complicate without obfuscating, and insist above all that to ignore what threatens us is both irresponsible and dangerous.” ―O, The Oprah Magazine“A timely meditation on politics and ethics. . .extraordinary . . .Sontag's insight and erudition are profound.” ―The Atlanta Journal-Constitution“Regarding the Pain of Others bristles with a sense of commitment--to seeing the world as it is, to worrying about the ways it is represented, even to making some gesture in the direction of changing it. . .the performance is thrilling to witness.” ―The New York Times Magazine“A fiercely challenging book. . .immensely thought-provoking.” ―The Christian Science Monitor

This is a short but thought-provoking contemplation on how we as viewers respond to photos/artwork that displays suffering, and what the motivations of the creators of such objects might be, both conscious and latent. This is the first work by Sontag I've read, though it probably won't be my last. Her writing is concise, clear, and sometimes masterly. She brings Joyce Carol Oates to mind, or at least their nonfiction works have a similar, probing style (and here I'm thinking of Oates' "On Boxing").This book focused primarily on photos/artwork related to war, which makes its scope perhaps smaller than I would have desired in a work with a title that sounds so sweeping. Therein lies my only quibble with a book that I would have otherwise awarded five stars. There is mention of everything from the Crimean War to Kosovo, but smaller incidents like the photos of the mass suicides of the Baader-Meinhof Group, for instance, receive no attention. Sontag is intelligent (that's an understatement) so I can't for the life of me figure out why she excludes non-war related images from the category of her titular "Pain" (the exception being lynchings in Jim Crow South). That, as previously mentioned, is a minor quibble with an otherwise flawless study. It bears mentioning that the work is shorter than I would have preferred it to be, if only because Sontag's lucid prose is a joy to read. She mentions another work of hers dealing with essays on photography at some point in the course of "Pain." I think I will have to seek that book out. Hopefully it's a little longer. In any case, recommended...

I believe that this book gives good observations and questions of the nature and response to photography, art, and other depictions of war rather than any real answers. Is it voyeurism looking at the gruesome and tragic, or does it elicit some compassion and motivate protest? How are the dead of enemy, friendly combatants, and civilians shown in pictures? Is remembering things we personally have not experienced through photographs an ethical act? In modern times have we become inured to these images, accepted as the daily news diet? The examples she gives from paintings, photographs, and movies can be Googled pretty instantly as you read along. It goes beyond propaganda and romanticism, which were the first things I expected when I got this book. Honestly, I just felt the book was a good companion tool while seeing these visual examples, reading the quotes and observations Sontag gives, and seeing how I respond to them.

The author asks questions and triggers insights about our fascination with the spectacle of pain and proclivity for cruelty. There may be no magic remedies that would assure more caring attitudes toward Other and empathetic interactions among peoples, but it would have been a more satisfying read to have had the author present some possible ways of nurturing care for all.

Great book on the history of how photographs have been used when depicting war and tragedy. Sontag challenges the way society thinks about how these images are used and should be used. While I think some of her analogies and conclusions are flawed, overall I appreciate her point of view and believe that this book is a valuable asset to the student of art history, photographers in particular.

I had never heard of Susan Sontag prior to my Survey of Photography class. We read the first chapter of "On Photography", it was good. I went ahead and bought the book myself. Later in the semester we read a short bit on "Regarding the Pain of Others", it was even better. All I can say is based on those 2, especially this one, Susan Sontag is amazing. I don't agree with everything she says, but I can't recall an instance that I felt she was misguided or confused. Her thoughts and ideas are well founded and presented. I've since learned of her reputation, and must say she earned it. It's a shame she didn't have more time to write, though there are many other pieces I've yet to read. The best thing I can say is that reading her allows for, in my experience, the chance to almost have a discussion with her. It's written in such a way that it isn't spoon fed to the reader. That's not to say it's a hard read, but it's open enough that your own thoughts can blend with hers.

Seemed to linger on points you shared with the author going into the book. Didn’t quite feel like I had my view expanded - but the depth of the conversation is what I expected from what I knew of the author. I found myself researching the images and art and photographer named she utilized as reference.

Had to read for class. Not impressed, however not bad; just didnt like.

Susan Sontag is known as a lover as well as a critique of photography. In Regarding the Pain of Others she focuses on the impact of horrible war-images - starting with paintings such as Goya's Disasters of the War (1810-1820) going up to the present, in which first photography and then film have taken over. She rightly and strongly criticises the old idea that 'pictures show the truth', and horrible pictures 'the truth of war', an idea especially popular in the Interwar Years (Ernst Friedrich, Virginia Woolf), but certainly anything but dead after 1945. Pictures have frames so they are framed (even when they are not staged or manipulated) and therefore can not show the truth in all its nuance, in all its effects. And besides: the photographer can have his or her intentions when painting or shooting the image, but that is not to say that this intention is indeed the consequence publication will have. A book that makes you think, and that is always a compliment.Leo van BergenAuthor of: Before my Helpless Sight. Multiplying Missional Leaders

Leadership is one of the most over-used and overwrought topics in Christian ministry today. Yet for all the books, blogs and conferences, there are two staggering realities we must come to grips with: First, while most churches believe they have leadership development programs, in actuality, they have programs that recruit and train volunteers, not leaders. A volunteer is someone who executes someone else’s vision. A leader is someone with a vision of their own. In truth, there are often only a few leaders in the average church and everyone else are simply executing their vision. It’s the genius with a thousand helpers.

Perhaps more troubling, though, is that our development programs are not about releasing leaders to the missional frontier, but volunteers keeping the machine of the church running. To be sure, we should attend to the organization of the church, for it is a significant thing when the scattered church gathers. But as the Church stares precipitous decline in the face—as we look to re-embrace the missio Dei—we must learn again the art that Jesus mastered: the task of multiplying missional leaders and releasing them to the cracks and crevices of society where there is little-to-no Kingdom presence.

People often like quippy sayings like, “We want to be known more for our sending capacity than our seating capacity.” This book is about how that can become a reality in your community.

Mike Breen writes about the need for missional leaders and about why churches often struggle to create them. He writes convictingly about church cultures that are rife with consumerism and celebrity and competitiveness. And, if we're honest, we can see echoes of those trends in our own ministries. I was particularly struck by this idea: "The means you use to attract people to you are usually the means you must use to keep them" (Kindle Loc 901).Breen then goes on to write about the character and the competencies needed for people to be missional leaders. These sections left me wishing for more. I'd love to hear more about how Breen develops character and how he trains his missional leaders in the necessary competencies. This was a real strength in Steve Saccone's book Protégé. Perhaps this is something that Breen will write more about in the future. The most challenging and, for me, most helpful section of the book was the 5 Capitals section. In it, Breen writes about 5 forms of capital that missional leaders need:* Spiritual capital* Relational capital* Physical capital* Intellectual capital* Financial capitalBreen argues convincingly that all 5 are important and that the list goes down in descending importance. In other words, physical capital is more important that intellectual capital. All of your intellectual resources will do you know good if you are burned out and exhausted. In my experience, most of the leadership training given to potential missional leaders trends heavy on increasing their intellectual capital and hardly ever touches on the other forms of capital. What will it profit a movement if we raise up leaders who know what do do but lack the strength and depth to do it?One last thing: throughout the book, Breen asks phenomenal and searching questions. I'll be reflecting on these questions for a while. They alone are worth the price of the book.I would definitely recommend reading Multiplying Missional Leaders, but would caution you: read this book only if you are willing to act on what you learn. It's all too easy to read books like these and do nothing with them, to feel like reading is the same as doing. Don't do it!

Many pastors are trying to motivate the churches they lead to express "love and good works," and would love to see a movement of discipleship and mission take off in their city. So why doesn't it happen more often? One of the main problems for many pastors is that the expression of the Body of Christ they lead doesn't have a skeletal structure of leaders within it, so it's more like a "Blob of Christ" that mostly just sits there. The best you can do is poke it with a stick (sermon) and hope for some kind of response, but you'll never be able to build a movement unless you get a skeletal structure of missional leaders in place, so the Body of Christ can stand up and work. You can't build a movement without lots of leaders. This is the basic idea behind Mike Breen's upcoming book Multiplying Missional Leaders. This book is a phenomenal resource for pastors and leaders. It has a great mix of big-picture strategic insights as well as practical, on-the-ground tactical suggestions for raising up leaders. Because I've known Mike for a few years, I have been practicing a lot of this stuff in my own ministry, and I can say that it has borne a lot of good fruit so far. Mike bridges an important gap I've seen between those who like elegantly-expressed missional theology and those who like to "get stuff done." Mike knows how to do both, and it's really refreshing.Like Building a Discipling Culture (to which it makes a great follow-up book), it reads a bit like a reference manual. The content is dense and meaty, and probably deserves to read a few times. I've heard Mike teach this content several times, and I still seem to get some new insight every time I hear or read it.
