Excellent, particularly (but not just) for beginners. Considering the book is only 160 pages, it is packed with tons of useful information. I like to shop estate sales and antique stores and wanted at least a fighting chance at recognizing fakes. This book makes me feel a little less vulnerable.Besides a lot of interesting tidbits on individual gems, the book has appendices and other information that are extremely helpful for quick reference. Here is a bullet list of (in my opinion) the books high points.• A Glossary of terms used in describing gems and their properties.• A list of color vs type of gem. As a total novice, this is where I start identifying things I’ve already bought. It at least helped me narrow down the possible stones for my web search on images. I am pretty sure my main mystery stone, is genuine yellow citrine.• A complete list of gemstone properties (i.e specific gravity, refractive index, hardness & crystal form.) Way beyond my needs but great info.• A translation table (between English, German, French, Italian and Spanish) on some of the more common terms & descriptive info.• A one-page list of reputable web sites, which is half the battle of buying.• I am big on Marquise cuts. This book has no marquise pics but it does have line drawings of the cuts and crystal systems• History, Myths and Legends was an interesting section that was totally unexpected. It even touched briefly on crystal healing theory and beliefs.• A chart (using diamond as the base reference) on size per carat. e.g. I had no idea “a 1 carat ruby is 13.35% smaller overall than a 1 carat diamond”.• Hallmarks for the different base and plate metals, including traditional fineness symbols and Assay offices stamps. I found out one of my rings is platinum, not a different fineness for silver as I originally thought.• A section on organic gems that I did not even know were classified as gems (i.e. ivory, abalone, jet & coral).• Other references for further reading• Last but not least the book has 3 value charts. One for Tanzanite, one for diamonds and one for gemstones.So much packed into so few pages. A great bargain by anyone’s standards

Pristine pictures IN COLOR, alphabetical order, it explains everything about the identification of precious and some semiprecious gemstones, gives you a look at the machines, gives you some history on gemstones and their various uses throughout history, the gems are bunched under what stone (Example: instead of Citrine, Amethyst, Ametrine, it says in large QUARTZ, then identifies each color and it's name) towards the back is a guide of where the highest quality stones have been mined, there is even a metallurgy guide in the back about how to identify what metal you have by the symbol on it. I must have read it a dozen times and still refer to it when I need to. MONEY WELL SPENT!

I bought this book and received the volume immediately. The book is slender but has a great set of pictures of the different gems. The book is set up like a dictionary with a discussion of each major (and many minor) gem usually with a review of how to identify it and how to distinguish some of the more common fakes.My only objection is that the book wasn't long enough.I liked the book a lot and would recommend it to anyone who loves gems.

This book is the best self study course on Gemstones. It covers all Gemstone catogories with pictures. It gives tips on identifying natural stones. Also, it has useful guidelines for buyers of the Gemstones.

A pretty good book, especially the opening sections about the history of gemstones and the methods used to identify diamonds.

The book was factually incorrect in several places and outdated in several others. The photos were alright but not worth the price. Skip it.

From the point of view of science and evolution, cultural, civilizations and inventions, this compact reference provides succinct explanations to readers about the history of human. For adults who grew up hating history and probably have forgotten most of the stuff they have learned in school, "Curiositree: Human World" would be a great choice for a quick review.The design of the book is in chart form hence readers could pick whatever topics interested them without feeling pressure to start reading from the beginning. Colorful graphics and rich text make this reference book a must-have. The amount of information could be too overwhelming for younger readers so I would say it's for middle school kids who enjoy history.The author definitely did an amazing job to put together thousand years of human history across different cultures together. It's a book full of useful information that resembles an encyclopedia about human history but not as dry as reading one. Academic, yes, but not as heavy and dull. "Curiositree: Human World" is definitely a quality book for curious young minds.

Beautiful, bright and colorful, this book is filled with bits of information from migrations and inventions, culture and religion, to war and modern technology, this book has it all. I love the use of artwork, timelines and charts to visually explain the concepts. I found this a bit boring and honestly, there's a lot in here I wouldn't want to visit, let alone know about.

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my uncle, and the night I wrapped it, I got online to buy a second one for myself.WOW! What an amazing book! I follow Atlas Obscura on Facebook, and they're one of my favorites. I had heard mention of a book and decided to check it out when I was holiday shopping this year. Man, am I glad I did! Look. First off, this thing is the size of an encyclopedia. This isn't some little piddly magazine-sized thing that you can read in one sitting. Oh HECK no. I'm looking forward to digesting this one in small spurts over a long period of time. It's heavy and packed full of never-before-seen info. I guarantee it!There's a terrific table of contents in front to guide you where you might want to go, but I kind of prefer the "surprise me" method of just opening it up. The book is visually stunning - the pages and photos are crisp and clear. The writing is awesome. It's so easy to lose yourself in here: If there's a "look inside" option, I recommend you do so now. I'll wait!The binding is heavy-duty. This book is built to last. If you're thinking about ordering it, order it. And if you're thinking about ordering it for a gift, go ahead and order two because once you peek, you're going to want one of your own. If I know you like I know I know you, then we both know I'm right.If this review even helped you a fraction of an iota, please give it a thumbs-up. I bought this for a 30-year old nephew whose county count was, I believe, pushing 40 about a year ago, and I think it may satisfy even him. (He’s the hardest to buy for member of the entire family!)I read a short description of the book in the travel section of the SF Chronicle a few weeks ago, and made the purchase based on that. Well, that combined with my sister verifying that her son might actually appreciate this book!There are many hundreds of places and things described over about 450 pages, with most including a photo, and the balance a drawing. I think the only things without a graphic are the short, “Also in or near…” entries. Those graphics add interest and tend to draw you in, encouraging you to read the piece about whatever is depicted graphically.The book must weigh something like 2 pounds – just guessing – meaning you might not be likely to pack it in your suitcase. However, it’s easy enough to take digital photos of any entries you may want to have easy access to on a trip. It’s printed on heavy paper, and I like that the pages are a pleasing, very light buff color, much nicer than stark white. Point being, it’s aesthetically a very nicely put together book.Because I bought this as a gift, I've looked through it closely but have not read it cover to cover. The entries seem to be written for a variety of readers and travelers, but certainly far from the lowest common denominator. It’s not a typical travel book! I don’t find every entry to be about a fascinating item, but a great many are, and possibly none whatsoever are dull. Even things that might not seem of particular interest based on the heading end up proving to be interesting when you get into the text. That said, there are items about things I have no interest in seeing, e.g., “Lake Monsters of the USA,” but there don’t seem to be many of that sort of thing included. As with "Lake Monsters," even if you (or a recipient) aren't likely to visit many of the places described, I think for many curious people this would make for an interesting read even without the travel element.It's not a perfect book, and I don't think any one book can be perfect for all readers, but I do think it's very good and I can easily recommend it for anyone who might be potentially interested. Given the quality of the contents and of the physical item itself, I am very pleased with the price. Easy 5 stars and recommendation!

This is a perfect book for a two minute break whenever your spirit needs boosting. Whether you find Jeremy Bentham's mummified corpse at University College London; the Beer Bottle Temple in Sisaket, Thailand; or the Canadian Potato Museum in D'Leary, PEI, you can return to your drab, dreary existence with the assurance that the World is "not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose". Buy this book! Revel in the places that you've seen! Revel in the places that you'd like to see! You won't be disappointed.

This book exceeded my already higher-than-average expectations. It's gorgeously designed and PACKED with interestingness on every page. The page layouts are complex and varied too, so it's fun to flip through and land on random sections about odd, wondrous places and artifacts halfway around the world (or in your own hometown!). So the act of making your way through the book feels like the kind of discovery and adventure covered in the content itself. Brilliant.I pre-ordered this because I was already a huge fan of the website and decided to support the project. I figured at the very least I'd have a gift ready for the holidays. But I am absolutely keeping this for myself, and will probably buy another copy for one of my family members soon. The book inspires you to venture out and explore, and reminds you that even in this era of Google Earth and Twitter there is plenty of mystery left out there that's waiting to be stumbled upon.

This is unlike any travel guide I've ever seen, full of surprising locations both near and far. The entire experience of reading Atlas Obscura is like having dinner with your smartest, friendliest acquaintance, who also happens to be a bit of a weirdo (in the best way). Overall, it is a fantastic, lively book, perfect for curious real-world and armchair travelers.
