Excellent Greek dictionary for beginning study of New Testament Greek. Required by class Syllabi and highly recommended by the instructor.

For a short period of time Dr. Herbert Bateman IV was a professor of New Testament at the Moody Bible Institute. I was a student there at the same time. While I did not have Dr. Bateman for Greek one of my roommates did. I was able to see second hand the skill and expertise Dr. Bateman possesses in both teaching and with Greek. So, when I saw this workbook, I knew it had to be good.Now, Dr. Bateman is Professor of New Testament at Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Fortunately, for those of us who are not able to study under him in person, we can still learn from this master teacher through this excellent workbook. As an intermediate study, this book requires a knowledge of basic Greek grammar before beginning. However, even if your knowledge of grammar is not perfect, the inductive nature of this workbook will strengthen those weak areas.This workbook focuses on the text of 1-3 John which is standard fare for intermediate Greek students. However, the ease of translation does not mean that John's epistles are simplistic. Far from it. This book reads like a running commentary with one exception. We are not passive recipients of another's knowledge. We are forced to study the text along with Bateman. This participatory inductive approach is both engaging and enlightening.Like other intermediate grammars, this helps students of Greek to learn while they study. Also, Bateman provides selections from major grammars and syntax studies so that they can be quickly and easily referenced.This workbook is an excellent tool for the grammar student to transition into exegesis. Bateman takes us along and involves us in the exegetical process. As a student of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, the mountain of Greek was almost overwhelming. In addition, I am over 50, so I had not thought of a participle for over 30 years. Essentially, in my quest to learn two languages, my own again and Koine Greek from scratch, Dr. Bateman's workbook was an immense help in clearing the "fog" from the first year of Greek. Through a step-by-step process, Dr. Bateman leads the learner through the Johannine Epistles one phrase at a time. This does sound arduous, but with repetition, patient explanations, and marvelous practical applications, they indeed focus one on the task at hand. I continue to use this workbook in my extended Greek classes and will continue to use it. It is that concise. Plus, I now understand the participle. Thank you, Dr. Bateman.

As a former student of Dr. Herbert Bateman I can confidently say that his workbook is a first class inductive approach to New Testament exegesis. Bateman addresses exegetical categories as they come up in the text of the Johannine epistles. Although at times the parsing and redundant questions seem somewhat laborious at first and pointless later, the very notion that such questions become almost "second nature" validates the approach of the workbook. If the student carefully answers the questions at the beginning of the workbook then throughout the workbook the questions will appear more and more obvious and simple--that is, the repetition serves to engrave the parsing and exegetical categories into our mind.

The book is well written, one might say it reads itself. Moreover, after several months since I read the book, I can safely say it changed my mindset. I have changed the view of my peers, my superiors and myself. I have changed my approach to several aspects of my life (study, work, sports,...). I really love the fact, that author took care with providing lots of references to his claims.I would further recommend the second book by Mathew Syed Black box thinking. The overlap is very subtle, which is rare in the self-development literature (it's often pointless to read several books by the same author).In summary, it's fun and full of useful information.

It's hard to resist comparing this book to Malcolm Gladwell's The Outliers. In The Outliers Gladwell helped spread the fame of the work of Anders Ericsson, FSU expert on how people acquire expert intelligence. Indeed, the phrase "10,000 hours" is now so ubiquitous it has become a cliche, although people often forget that it refers not just to practice but to STRUCTURED practice.While The Outliers excels in its writing and infotainment value, Bounce seems more instructive. It's hard to finish Bounce and not feel like there is a lot more you could do if you just applied yourself. Syed mixes personal experience, anecdotes of others, and empirical data to hammer home the point that living with a "growth" mindset is richly rewarding.Syed does an excellent job of explaining how some people continue to reach new thresholds in their pursuits while many others plateau early. I often give this book as a gift to nieces, nephews, and friends' children who are entering college, telling them I wish I could have read (and believed) this book when I was their age.

I read a lot, a lot, and this is one of the most significant books I have read. Anyone striving for high performance, in any field, as well as anyone raising or teaching children should read this book. I've been very interested in reading one of the books which are based, at least to a degree, on the work of Anders Ericsson and purposeful practise being more important than talent you are born with. There are many psychological points, which anyone can develop, which lead to someone bouncing back from difficulty and doing well. With practise being so important to superior performance, you must have persistance or you won't get in the practice.Highly recommended. I've already given it as a gift and will be giving out more.

The talent myth pervades our thinking in various forms, e.g., musicians, leaders, etc. are "born--not made." While one should acknowledge the existence of those rare individuals will seemingly superhuman aptitudes, according to the author, most "experts" in whatever field reach the pinnacle through a combination of factors--factors within the reach of mere mortals! This is good news and awfully encouraging to anyone willing to obtain the proper tutelage and engage in "purposeful practice" over the long haul. This book lit a fire under me to develop a plan and "do the time" in purposeful practice in order to master the guitar. Woodshed, here I come!

Shares many of the same themes and material that Geoff Colvin presented in Talent is Overrated. I believe the author writes from a personal perspective having competed at table tennis. I loved how he drew parallels with other sports. In the end, the basic tenants of focused practice, supporting family members, access to great coaching, internal desire to succeed, willingness to commit to excellence...etc. are hard to trump in any endeavor of life.

It has allowed me to see that the process wasn't as random as I had thought; that the hard work; delay of gratification and attention to detail allowed me to see things that other tennis players didn't simply because I employed 'purposeful practice' at every and all moments I was involved in the sport.This book goes into great detail about how a work ethic, allows ANYONE the opportunity to succeed by dispelling so many myths on why players, musicians, athletes, people in all sorts of industry become successful.Just loved his analysis referring to countless studies and real life examples of Earl and Tiger Woods, Mozart and his father, David Beckham and his work ethic. the wonders of the Polgar Sisters in chess.And the one common thread that one and all had to success?Read the book and find out for yourself. This was an entertaining book, and maybe I should have looked at other reviews, but before I bought it I didn't realize the jokes sometimes were relevant for Brittish humor instead of American humor. It isn't a problem for most jokes, but some refer to things that aren't relevant if you live in the States

My brother-in-law and sister are expecting their first child, and as a joke, my brother-in-law said that he wanted a book of dad jokes. When he opened this christmas day, I thought he would cry. He reads that book like it's the bible and reads it to my sister's belly, preparing their daughter for the dad jokes. I would recommend this to any new father, or anyone with a sense of humor in particular

My kids keep hiding this from me, which I take as a full endorsement.

Bought this for my brother for christmas as he's a new dad. My other brother and I thumped through it before hand. It's what you expect, really bad puns and jokes, but the kind of bad jokes that you can't help but laugh at. Would make for a good book to keep on the coffee table.

Gave it as a gift to a dentist I was seeing for treatment--he always had some corny joke to tell to start the procedure, I thought he needed updating a bit, so I gave him something to expand his repertoire.

Dad thought the jokes were great. This is written for British people, so it has some sayings and stuff that aren't relevant to Americans, but still cute nonetheless!

Some of the jokes were either old school or british... still a really great buy for a Dad with dad jokes!

While the package that this was shipped in I had to have it returned like 3 times to get one that wasn't all roughed up, the book itself is awesome. I love Giant Days, and the dialog in this is some of the best. Never thought one of my favorite comics would be about 3 girls in college.

I'm a big fan of John Allison and was excited when the Giant Days series was announced. Although initially disappointed he wouldn't be drawing it, the artist is fantastic and expressive. Some great stories about friendship and general college life. Well told, witty, and interesting.

I've loved all of the stories by Allison, artwork fits his stories

The story is beginning to get into its rhythm, the realism is excellent, look forward to book 4. I would recommend this to students and those who recall their student days with bitter-sweetness.
