This thorough supplemental workbook leaves no stone unturned! Presenting a twelve-step process for analyzing the Greek text of 1–3 John, A Workbook for Intermediate Greek will be especially welcomed by students in either their first year (second semester) or second year. Students are expertly guided by well-crafted questions that help them gain a mastery of how words relate to each other. Throughout, Bateman focuses on syntax, but also offers ample grammar review, as well as many historical, exegetical, and grammatical comments. A Workbook for Intermediate Greek can be easily used in conjunction with most Greek grammars. It is referenced to six intermediate grammars, including Daniel Wallace’s two standard works, and five beginning grammars, such as William Mounce’s Basics of Biblical Greek and John Wenham’s Elements of New Testament Greek. It also interacts with six Bible translations: KJV, NASB, NRSV, NIV, NET, and NLT. An electronic answer key is available from the publisher or author. “A Workbook for Intermediate Greek is an excellent guide to the study of New Testament Greek, especially for students who have completed at least one year of grammatical study. It is extremely user-friendly as it walks the student through the exegesis and translation of 1–3 John. References to both beginning and intermediate grammars are keyed throughout the book. If you want to master (and not just learn) Greek, I recommend that you get and use this excellent study tool.” —David Alan Black Professor of New Testament and Greek Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary “This workbook is a welcome tool for helping students with translation and syntax, and 1–3 John are terrific for entry-level learning. Whether in part or whole, the material can be easily integrated within an intermediate grammar course. In our particular context I recommend this book to our first year morphology students: ‘Use it for getting ahead on syntax during the summer!’” —William J. Webb Professor of New Testament Greek Heritage Seminary, Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Herbert W. Bateman IV has taught beginning and intermediate Greek for more than twenty years on the college and graduate level. He is the editor of Four Views on the Warning Passages in Hebrews, Three Central Issues in Contemporary Dispensationalism, and Authentic Worship.

Excellent Greek dictionary for beginning study of New Testament Greek. Required by class Syllabi and highly recommended by the instructor.
For a short period of time Dr. Herbert Bateman IV was a professor of New Testament at the Moody Bible Institute. I was a student there at the same time. While I did not have Dr. Bateman for Greek one of my roommates did. I was able to see second hand the skill and expertise Dr. Bateman possesses in both teaching and with Greek. So, when I saw this workbook, I knew it had to be good. Now, Dr. Bateman is Professor of New Testament at Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Fortunately, for those of us who are not able to study under him in person, we can still learn from this master teacher through this excellent workbook. As an intermediate study, this book requires a knowledge of basic Greek grammar before beginning. However, even if your knowledge of grammar is not perfect, the inductive nature of this workbook will strengthen those weak areas. This workbook focuses on the text of 1-3 John which is standard fare for intermediate Greek students. However, the ease of translation does not mean that John's epistles are simplistic. Far from it. This book reads like a running commentary with one exception. We are not passive recipients of another's knowledge. We are forced to study the text along with Bateman. This participatory inductive approach is both engaging and enlightening.Like other intermediate grammars, this helps students of Greek to learn while they study. Also, Bateman provides selections from major grammars and syntax studies so that they can be quickly and easily referenced. This workbook is an excellent tool for the grammar student to transition into exegesis. Bateman takes us along and involves us in the exegetical process. With an abundance of notes, footnotes, explanations and references, this is sure to be a great tool for further study.NOTE: In accordance with the regulations of the Federal Trade Commission I would like to state that I received a complementary copy of the aforementioned text for the purposes of review. I was not required to furnish a positive review.
As a student of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, the mountain of Greek was almost overwhelming. In addition, I am over 50, so I had not thought of a participle for over 30 years. Essentially, in my quest to learn two languages, my own again and Koine Greek from scratch, Dr. Bateman's workbook was an immense help in clearing the "fog" from the first year of Greek. Through a step-by-step process, Dr. Bateman leads the learner through the Johannine Epistles one phrase at a time. This does sound arduous, but with repetition, patient explanations, and marvelous practical applications, they indeed focus one on the task at hand. I continue to use this workbook in my extended Greek classes and will continue to use it. It is that concise. Plus, I now understand the participle. Thank you, Dr. Bateman.
As a former student of Dr. Herbert Bateman I can confidently say that his workbook is a first class inductive approach to New Testament exegesis. Bateman addresses exegetical categories as they come up in the text of the Johannine epistles. Although at times the parsing and redundant questions seem somewhat laborious at first and pointless later, the very notion that such questions become almost "second nature" validates the approach of the workbook. If the student carefully answers the questions at the beginning of the workbook then throughout the workbook the questions will appear more and more obvious and simple--that is, the repetition serves to engrave the parsing and exegetical categories into our mind.
