I follow Atlas Obscura on Facebook, and they're one of my favorites. I had heard mention of a book and decided to check it out when I was holiday shopping this year. Man, am I glad I did! Look. First off, this thing is the size of an encyclopedia. This isn't some little piddly magazine-sized thing that you can read in one sitting. Oh HECK no. I'm looking forward to digesting this one in small spurts over a long period of time. It's heavy and packed full of never-before-seen info. I guarantee it!There's a terrific table of contents in front to guide you where you might want to go, but I kind of prefer the "surprise me" method of just opening it up. The book is visually stunning - the pages and photos are crisp and clear. The writing is awesome. It's so easy to lose yourself in here: If there's a "look inside" option, I recommend you do so now. I'll wait!The binding is heavy-duty. This book is built to last. If you're thinking about ordering it, order it. And if you're thinking about ordering it for a gift, go ahead and order two because once you peek, you're going to want one of your own. If I know you like I know I know you, then we both know I'm right.If this review even helped you a fraction of an iota, please give it a thumbs-up. I bought this for a 30-year old nephew whose county count was, I believe, pushing 40 about a year ago, and I think it may satisfy even him. (He’s the hardest to buy for member of the entire family!)I read a short description of the book in the travel section of the SF Chronicle a few weeks ago, and made the purchase based on that. Well, that combined with my sister verifying that her son might actually appreciate this book!There are many hundreds of places and things described over about 450 pages, with most including a photo, and the balance a drawing. I think the only things without a graphic are the short, “Also in or near…” entries. Those graphics add interest and tend to draw you in, encouraging you to read the piece about whatever is depicted graphically.The book must weigh something like 2 pounds – just guessing – meaning you might not be likely to pack it in your suitcase. However, it’s easy enough to take digital photos of any entries you may want to have easy access to on a trip. It’s printed on heavy paper, and I like that the pages are a pleasing, very light buff color, much nicer than stark white. Point being, it’s aesthetically a very nicely put together book.Because I bought this as a gift, I've looked through it closely but have not read it cover to cover. The entries seem to be written for a variety of readers and travelers, but certainly far from the lowest common denominator. It’s not a typical travel book! I don’t find every entry to be about a fascinating item, but a great many are, and possibly none whatsoever are dull. Even things that might not seem of particular interest based on the heading end up proving to be interesting when you get into the text. That said, there are items about things I have no interest in seeing, e.g., “Lake Monsters of the USA,” but there don’t seem to be many of that sort of thing included. As with "Lake Monsters," even if you (or a recipient) aren't likely to visit many of the places described, I think for many curious people this would make for an interesting read even without the travel element.It's not a perfect book, and I don't think any one book can be perfect for all readers, but I do think it's very good and I can easily recommend it for anyone who might be potentially interested. Given the quality of the contents and of the physical item itself, I am very pleased with the price. Easy 5 stars and recommendation!

This book exceeded my already higher-than-average expectations. It's gorgeously designed and PACKED with interestingness on every page. The page layouts are complex and varied too, so it's fun to flip through and land on random sections about odd, wondrous places and artifacts halfway around the world (or in your own hometown!). So the act of making your way through the book feels like the kind of discovery and adventure covered in the content itself. Brilliant.I pre-ordered this because I was already a huge fan of the website and decided to support the project. I figured at the very least I'd have a gift ready for the holidays. But I am absolutely keeping this for myself, and will probably buy another copy for one of my family members soon. The book inspires you to venture out and explore, and reminds you that even in this era of Google Earth and Twitter there is plenty of mystery left out there that's waiting to be stumbled upon.

This is unlike any travel guide I've ever seen, full of surprising locations both near and far. The entire experience of reading Atlas Obscura is like having dinner with your smartest, friendliest acquaintance, who also happens to be a bit of a weirdo (in the best way). Overall, it is a fantastic, lively book, perfect for curious real-world and armchair travelers.

This was a waste of my money. The book is horribly thought out. The pages aren't perforated and there are no dates in the book, so it's hard to keep track of where you left off. Maybe it would be better if you could rip the pages out?

This book is a MUST READ for anyone searching for answers in healing in the supernatural. My Test-imonial (out of three); I did what the author taught and prayed over a woman in Ohio, who was bed ridden from a minor stroke and had back pains. I asked her what her pain level was, in tears she told be 12.I grabbed a hold of her ankles and prayed and commanded for the spirit of infirmity to come out of her and to be healed in Jesus Name (Our Spiritual Contract) .... After about five minutes of praying (my first time praying for someone), I opened my eyes, tears were flowing from her face. I asked her what her pain level was now and she said ZERO!I told her not to be lying to me! (Faith = confidence!) She told me she felt a warm fuzzy feeling come over her whole body where the pain (spirit) was GONE and she felt at 100% peace. Every Christian in America needs to buy this book. We all have been lied to. We ARE the church!

UPDATE 3/29/15It works! Since reading this book several months ago, I thought I'd give it a try and put into action what I read. I have been praying for healing for people and have seen miracle after miracle - often instant healing! My faith for praying for healing has skyrocketed and now often when I go to stores or restaurants, I look for strangers to pray for. I just do what he said to do in the book: ask the Holy Spirit to come, once feeling God's presence, I speak directly to the body parts and command the healing in Jesus' name (sometimes 6-7 times or more - I learned from the book that persistence is the key), tell pain/inflammation to leave and often tell spirits of pain/infirmity/trauma to leave too. This book is the first that really encouraged me to know that God WANTS to use me (and YOU!) to heal the person for whom I'm praying! The miracles keep coming!Original review:I couldn't put this book down. I recommend this book to anyone interested in praying for the sick or being healed themselves. It is practical, interesting (lots of anecdotes), simple to read/understand and lays out scriptural basis well. It covers topics pertinent to healing that I had always wondered about (e.g. spiritual influences in sickness, faith, emotional healing, demons/deliverance, what if healing doesn't come, why some people lose their healing, etc.) and explains it in a clear way. The book filled me with knowledge and new faith to pray for the sick as well as increased hunger to hear God. This book is a must-read for all believers to know and exercise the authority given to us.

Many patients who are so anxious that they are afraid to leave the house who has to be brought to my office by my their family after much effort, are now able to be free of anxiety and worry without taking any medications ! We will do everything humanly possible to help you but in many conditions, complete cure can on be from God the Great Physician.Glory to God! Jesus lives and He is the same yesterday, today and forever. I pray that more and more people will be healed by God. I pray that the body of Christ will pray more for the healing of others, and of ourselves and for the salvation of more souls. I continue to pray for the Holy Spirit to continue to move stronger and more powerfully each day on Earth so that all will be saved. Thanks be to God.

Some may find it a little hard to get into because there's a lot of information Colonel Fawcett touches on, but for me it is the single most informative book that I myself have ever read.As a child I grew up expecting exploration to be like Indiana Jones, but my trips overseas taught me elsewise. Colonel Fawcett's book/journals only further illustrate my point because real life exploration is quite serious and dangerous, and often teaches you life lessons that you'll soon not forget. Some can be a choice of life & death.Fawcett's time spent in South America is something that I'd never heard of until only a few months ago and I learned of it simply by taking up a book and reading.

While in an airport terminal I bought Lost City of Z so I knew about Col. Fawcett. Anyone expecting this to be Indiana Jones will sadly be disappointed. If you love exploration, real roughing it, share a willingness to take risks along with history and study of man in one of the worst places on earth to survive this is an excellent read.

Written in an old style by the youngest son of Percy Fawcett, this is where much of the inspiration for the major motion picture adaptation of the Lost City of Z came from. The book was written at a time when it was still possible that the explorer was still alive and when many speculated he had gone native. It's a great insight to the man and his motivations as well.

This book was a terrific read UNTIL I got so interested that I started to research it. I was so disappointed that it is a fraud. You have to do a couple of searches to find the fraud In my opinion that happened by FAWCETT S ONLY LIVING SON. It ruined the entire book and the history of it.

Wonderful read, much seeming if not first hand by the man himself, making this a great first hand source and account. Because of this the telling is linear, no bouncing back and forth in time and place. The story begins with his first assignment as a cartographer to help determine a boundary in South America, and then goes to other assignments doing same for others. A very good way into the book there start to be ethnographic and geo political, the in even smaller scale nuances that seem to provoke the author that there is 'something there' that academics of his time had not imagined. Amazing astute observations of the vile corruption of the times and inhumanity to man, with the native peoples always losing, struck me many times how unfunny (and how that still happens) because of resources and greed. So it is far more than a put this foot in front of the other Indiana Jones fiction - this person has a conscience and compassion, no two dimensional character here, and in many places almost advocates for intoxicating and .enlightening aspects of native tribes and peoples. So be prepared to learn a little if not a lot very unpleasant history regarding the rubber trade and South American slavery. There were many parts about this that I found very difficult to read and doubt Hollywood will include?Any way, the lost City of Z doesn't come into the book until maybe the final quarter? No mention at all until then. Keep in mind that historically what was happening in the archeological world with the Maya, Egypt, Babylon, Minoan Crete, the crazes, the times... who knows what? maybe a lost world?I found the book a compelling account of his thoughts, his times, his travels, interests, personality. It functions as an anthropological work while retaining honest there at the times adventure. The historical character and understanding you can gain into a small part of the South American 'games of money and thrones' and it's impact on today should not be minimized.Well worth taking the time to read on many levels.

Still reading this fascinating book, and shall pass it on to other family members that are intrigued by some of the great mysteries in this world. The supplier described the condition of the book exactly, and it was shipped right on time. Thanks,
