Review
This book should be in every school library, read by every person who manages the local catalog, and kept nearby as a handy reference. (School Library Connection)Cataloging for School Librarians is a great example of a school library cataloging textbook. The references Kelsey makes to historical figures who have contributed to the development of bibliographic documentation and classification (including Melville Dewey and Minnie Sears) are nice additions that help provide context to the reasons why we use the Dewey Decimal Classification and Sears List of Subject Headings today. (Technicalities)This highly comprehensive volume covers the subject in great depth, illustrating the encyclopedic knowledge of the author. Marie Kelsey is a well-recognized authority in this field and has placed much of her knowledge within the covers of this book. . . .This volume surely deserves a place in library training departments and possibly some larger Schools Library Services with a training and advisory role. (The School Librarian)Cataloging for School Librarians is a very practical guide, written in a straight-forward, conversational tone, for real-world application. The comparisons of AACR2 with RDA are invaluable. This book provides the necessary practical learning, but also challenges readers to think about the reasons behind the decisions with the ‘Test your critical thinking’ questions. Reminding me of the tag line, ‘Thinking like a historian,’ which is common in school social studies instruction, here, the challenge is ‘Thinking like a cataloger!’ The variety of practice questions at the ends of different chapters keeps the learning from becoming ‘same-old, same-old’ as the reader works through the text. (JoAnne Tiedemann, District Cataloging Librarian/Media Specialist, Madison Metropolitan School District, Wisconsin)Cataloging for School Librarians presents the theory and practice of cataloging and classification to students and practitioners needing a clear sequential process to help them overcome cataloging anxiety. With the instructions in this book, the new cataloger will become proficient at creating bibliographic records that meet current national standards and at making library materials accessible to students and faculty. It covers AACR2, RDA, FRBR, Sears, and the Dewey Decimal Classification and presents numerous examples of how to catalog books, nonprint, and electronic library materials using the MARC format. To reinforce learning, each chapter concludes with a review quiz and a critical-thinking question. Cataloging for School Librarians includes a glossary and an index.

From the Author
Getting the job done is exactly what my goal for this book was when I wrote it. For fifteen years I taught cataloging in the classroom and to distance students studying to be school librarians. Never finding an adequate textbook, I had to write each lesson myself in order to convey basic concepts in an organized fashion. Those lessons have been transformed into this book. It covers both theory (why) and practice (how) of all steps in cataloging both print and non-print materials typically found in a school library. If you have been looking for a textbook that enlightens rather than baffles your students, this book could well be the answer. I know these lessons work because I have used them repeatedly. Please contact the publisher for a review copy soon! Best of luck in teaching your next cataloging course! Marie Kelsey, Ph.D., University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Very detailed read. I had to have this for one of my college classes.
Great for what it needs to do, but it could use some updating.
arrived as promised. will do business again
It has a lot of good info, but it also often points out things that a school librarian doesn't need to know. I would rather it skip these topics or just share the information - don't just say I won't need to know this.
I purchased the Kindle version. There are no page numbers given. This is extremely frustrating when the professor asks you to complete the assignment on page 43 and I have to go and manually count pages.
Yes, I had to buy this for a not so fun class. However, my complaint is that there are many MISTAKES! Like page 111, Table 8.2 should have $a before Myers, Walter Dean and before The blues of Flats Brown, for example. The book is about cataloging, which is all about DETAILS! So get the DETAILS right!
Got the book in great condition!
Like any other college textbook... Nothing to jump up and shout about, but got the job done
