Our church class is currently studying this book. I've found CREED quite helpful in remembering and clarifying the Apostle's Creed which is said in church each Sunday. I'm a big fan of Adam Hamilton's writings. He writes in a clear, succinct way which is not overly wordy or too deep for the Christian who has not attended divinity school. In saying that, however, I do find his books always insightful, interesting, and appealing both in content and writing style, and I always learn new information and perspective which deepen my spiritual understanding. I will continue to purchase and read Hamilton's books as I have done in the past.
I have read other Hamilton books that I have enjoyed, but this one just seemed rushed. It never felt like it lived into the subtitle of explaining "what Christians Believe and Why". If you are looking for a book that dives deeper into the Apostles Creed then check out Michael F. Bird's book called "What Christians Ought to Believe: An Introduction to Christian Doctrine Through the Apostles Creed."
I love all of Adam Hamilton's books. Our church uses them in Bible studies, which I also enjoy and appreciate. So, I have the Kindle version of the book and everyone else has the real books. Our leader says to turn to page so and so, and there lies the problem. My Kindle would know how to find the page, if it was programmed in, but it is not, so I am left fumbling. So one would think, that any book used as a study guide should have pages turned on, so why not this one. That is my beef and one this hope is soon fixed, as we will probably use other books by Mr. Hamilton in some future Bible study.
I normally love Adam Hamilton's books. But this one is somehow less than I expected. I was looking for a small group Bible study book and thought this would be perfect. What I found is that it is really written for people who are new to the Christian faith or thinking about becoming a Christian. There is nothing in the world wrong with that, and this book is great for that purpose. However, it was not what I was looking for my purposes. I find that there is too much language and not enough content. I also am not crazy about the set up of the chapters. The theology behind the book is sound. I would give this book to anyone who asked me about my faith and why I believe in Jesus as the Son of God.
Another brilliant book by Pastor Hamilton. He has an amazing ability to take complex subjects and make them highly readable. He's balanced in his approach and shows respect for differing thoughts regarding religion.
This is a really good study series. The book and the DVD raised good, useful questions in the group meetings, and made my 10-week sermon series on the Apostles' Creed more meaningful and enjoyable for the congregation. You really need all three: the book, the DVD, and the leader's guide. I skipped a large part of the guide suggestions, partly because they would have lengthened the sessions to several hours. But the guide is flexible in this manner. A good, productive study series.
For Christian's and non-Christian's alike, this examination of the essential beliefs of Christianity frees us from the need to debate the non-essential issues as it challenges us to lovingly tolerate other points of view. Adam Hamilton offers insights into tough concepts like creation and resurrection using recent advances in physics and genetics as illustrations that make it easier for some skeptics to take a leap of faith and say confidently, "I believe!"
There was nothing to dislike about this book. It was well-written and great for those new to the faith, those investigating the faith, and even a blessing to life-long believers. Highly recommended and an easy read. If you you are a teacher, I’d recommended the DVD and the teacher’s guide. Great for Sunday school, an evening study, or even to be adapted for a sermon series,
