About the Author

Tadeusz Borowski was born in the Ukraine to Polish parents and was imprisoned in Auschwitz and Dachau from 1943 to 1945. Considered a great of postwar Polish literature, he attended a boarding schoool run by Franciscan monks and then studied literature in the underground Warsaw University—during the German occupation secondary school and college were forbidden to Poles. He was arrested in April 1943 and was held in the Pawiak prison, Auschwitz, Dautmergen-Natzweiler, and finally the Dachau-Allach camp, which was liberated by the US Army in May 1945.While much of his prewar work was comprised of poetry, his subsequent works detailing life in concentration camps were written in prose. His most famous work, a series of short stories called Farewell to Maria, was given the English title This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentleman. Borowski committed suicide in 1951, at the age of 28.

Tadeusz Borowski (b. 1922, d. 1951) spent over two years in Nazi concentration camps, principally Auschwitz and then Dachau. After the War, he wrote a number of stories about the concentration camps, which no doubt are based largely on personal experiences. They have been collected under the jaunty, sardonic title THIS WAY FOR THE GAS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. The book is a unique contribution to concentration camp literature.Borowski was not Jewish. He was imprisoned by the Nazis for his involvement in underground educational and publishing enterprises in Occupied Warsaw. He was sent to Auschwitz as a worker, essentially a slave. He and his non-Jewish comrades were put to work building and maintaining camp infrastructure and processing the hundreds of thousands of Jews from the railway ramp, where the transport trains arrived, to the gas-chambers and crematoria, to the marshes and fields where ashes and bones were dumped.In one of the pieces in the book, the first-person narrator writes to his fiancée, who is imprisoned at Birkenau (as was Borowski's own fiancée): "I do not know whether we shall survive, but I like to think that one day we shall have the courage to tell the world the whole truth and call it by its proper name." That, of course, is what Borowski did in THIS WAY FOR THE GAS. And for him, part of the "whole truth" was the complicity and the guilt of those who, like him, survived. (The real-life coda to the book is that Borowski, just as he was gaining acclaim as one of the literary lions of post-War communist Poland, committed suicide by inhaling the gas from a gas stove.)It is a powerful book. If one of my sons asked me to name one book to read about the concentration camps, I would tell him "If This Is a Man", by Primo Levi. If he then asked for a second book, THIS WAY FOR THE GAS would be it.

Concentration camp prisoners give a miniaturized picture of humanity in general. Not all are brave, saintly, or even totally innocent. The brutality discussed in this book is a sickening testament to the way humans behave toward one another in dire circumstances. Continual abusiveness to those around you can deaden you to its existence in order to preserve your own sanity. The drive for self-preservation can lead to unthinkable acts on one prisoner from another. This book gives evidence to the belief that no one is innocent. Whether through apathy, greed, self-preservation, disdain or hatred, we all share in the environment that allows corrupt government to flourish, demonic men to wield power, families, groups, churches, cities, nations -- the world to destroy themselves from inside out.In all such discussion, the question arises, What can one person (I) do? The answer most often is, Nothing. Until that answer changes, we are likely to see more of the same, all over the planet.

This book should be required reading for anyone looking to understand the history of the Holocaust. Borowski gives not only a first-hand account of a prisoner in a Nazi death camp, but a rare insight into the daily lives of those who lived and died in the camps. These are not stories of victims and villains, but a more nuanced portrayal of what people do to stay alive under a twisted, homicidal regime. This book is a painfully honest portrait of human behavior at its ugliest, but also the ways that people endure. Borowski's stories are a mirror for us all to look in and see ourselves.

I have been passionate about reading everything about the Holocaust. I wasn't allowed to as a child and by accident read House of Dolls in a friends house in the 60's. I was horrified and more so when I learned I had lost two great aunts from Poland. This book is difficult to read. It's not only the horror of it all, but the beautiful souls that never had the chance to live. That part jumps out at you. The loss of so many people as a normal part of the day is pure hell. The author did not want you to like the narrator but you can't help but see that through the tough exterior he had built to protect himself, he did suffer. He hated himself for feeling and hated himself for living. Probably that's why he/narrator killed himself. It wasn't so much survivor's guilt (though he probably had that too) as not being able to cope in the world after the war. He didn't belong anywhere except in a camp. He called Paris a place where corpses live. He didn't know who to hate more, who to blame. The Germans in his quasi memoir are inhuman and cruel to a point where they seem almost a caricature, yet you know it is absolutely true. I can't say I liked this book. It is not a book to like. It is a book to keep, to remember, to mourn. I keep in my mind the picture of a young girl with blonde curls who confronts the narrator with "where are they taking us". He is not allowed to say. She answers, "never mind I know" and she goes to the death truck even though the Germans want to keep her in the camp. He is blinded by her youth and maturity and loss. And so are we.

This book is the most graphic description of existence in a concentration campfrom an individual's point of view that I have ever read and I have read manydescriptions and survivor's accounts. It uses very spare language but the details it describes speak for themselves. It is more horrible than Primo Levi's works. I read these accounts as a tribute both to the dead and to the survivors of the Holocaust, so they can be remembered as individual human beings and not just as statistics. If you read Elie Weisel and Primo Levi, you should also read this book.

Grim tale by a man who walked the horror! In the end, he may have survived but the horror and misery did him in. Fascinating daily horror by those who were just trying to get thru that one day, not thinking of the next. The story of that survival life was chilling. Some real life characters were so strong, thoughtful of suffering others, and some so absorbed in the self-survival being. Enlightening to say the least and admirable for those who got thru it.

I wish there was more detail to the faces. A good reference and starting point - I just feel it could have been better with just a bit more effort on the part of the author.

I have trouble with deciding the expression I need to convey certain emotions within characters I draw. This book gave me hundreds of examples to look at in order to help me out when I am I need. It does have a chapter that teaches the basics of drawing faces and expressions which is useful. I wouldn't quite say this book teaches exactly "how" to draw all facial expressions, but it does give great examples to someone who is just looking for guidance. All in all, I would recommend this book since I am constantly referring to it.

I bought this for my budding artist teenage daughter, who prefers anime/chibi/manga style drawing. She has already, in a month, greatly improved the expressiveness of her characters and sketches. My only disappointment was the totally unnecessary barely dressed (string bikini on one, and t-shirt and stockings on another) and provocatively posed full-color drawings of young females in the back of the book. I removed those pages before gifting it to my daughter as planned. I realize those types of poses and exaggerated anatomy is typical in anime, but because this book is about drawing -faces-, they were very out of place in -this- book. I would have given it 5 stars is not for the inclusion of these 2 images.

In the first part of the book it teaches you some basics, and the rest is referance to facial features to indicate some emotion. The end of the book teaches you how to succesfully use a computer program to draw in detail and paint your character. I would really recomend it.

This book is a good reference for when you've already developed a solid drawing foundation. It displays plenty of facial expressions that are unique to Manga, but if you are wanting to develop a strong knowledge of realistic anatomy you aren't going to find it here. If you just want to doodle Manga characters for fun then it will be more valuable to you.If you want to create an actual Manga, this (and most How to draw Manga type books) are not going to give you the knowledge of perspective, anatomy, tonal values, etc.Once you can draw realistic depictions of human beings (which you should strive for if you want to be a serious Mangaka) you can stylize it and come up with your own characters, backgrounds, etc.Once your drawing is solid then picking up a copy of this book would be a smart choice.As a reference source I give it 5/5 stars.

Wow! This book is truly amazing. I am a Graphic Artist and I am using this book in order to widen my horizons. I love this book because it isveasy to understand and made with care. I feel like the creators of this book didn't do this just to make a pile of money. The information in this book is very helpful and I enjoy the art as well. Quick shipping and under $10.00! Amazing!

Had plenty, plenty of expressions, as the cover advertises! I think I was definitely able to adopt and apply some of the drawing techniques for typical manga style. One thing that bothered me though was that there wasn't always a lot of writing; Perhaps that'd be a plus for some people, but many of the pages were just a sea of faces with a sentence or two of vague directions. I guess I was expecting something a bit more technical that went more in-depth? As well, I thought the beginning section about "character types" was full of bad tropes and seemed kind of irrelevant, like page fillers. Either way, looking at the faces seems like enough to help anyone better their technique with faces and expressions.

12 year old sister is learning how to draw anime so i purchased this for her birthday. She LOVED it. She learned so much from this book. it is much thicker and larger than I expected and a far better quality than the ones I had seen in the store. It has made her very happy!

This book helped my daughter make her Manga art more expressive! Great addition to a Manga library. My daughter loves that Ms. Aya is self taught and has mastered the art. It inspires her.

I am a home teacher, and my student is very interested in Benjamin Franklin, so this book is perfect for his reading level. He is autistic, and a slow learner, and reads on a 3 -5th grade level, though he is 31 years old. He needs and often enjoys low-vocabulary, high-interest chapter books, and Ben Franklin, by Aladdin Paperbacks is excellent for him. My student is Chinese, and English is a second language to him, and this series of reading materials functions well as a vehicle for learning English, and encourages his interest in history and famous people. I plan or ordering additional books from this series.

Books by Augusta Stevenson can always be counted on to deliver a good story and to respect a child's intelligence - and to teach. The book opens: "A long time ago, away up in New England in the little city of Boston there was a certain blue ball. It was about the size of a cocoanut, and it hung above the front door of a certain little house. On this blue ball was a name - Josiah Franklin. That was all, but it was enough. Everyone in Boston knew that the blue ball was the sign Josiah Franklin used for his candle-and-soap shop in Union Street. They knew that he lived in this little house, too, as most tradesmen did in those days. They knew that the shop was in the front room facing the street, and that the Franklin family lived in the big room just back of it." The Childhood of Family Americans series, almost 100 years old now, chronicles the early years of famous American men and women in an accessible manner. Each book is faithful in spirit to the values and experiences that influenced the person's development. These books reaffirm the importance of our American heritage.

My 7 yr old used this book for school and he loved reading about Ben Franklin. He always wanted to know what was going to happen in the next chapter so we would often read more than one chapter at a time!

My daughter was required to read this for her literature work. She really enjoyed it, and finished it early.

Good information for a children's story writer. Good to know that Franklin was not always a good model, but this book doesn't emphasize that, it wouldn't be good for children if it did.

So glad for these books.Kids read for fun and homeschool. We love all that we've read so far from this series.

Greg has been climbing since 1994, and he can tell you every move on every route heÂ’s done, draw a topo from memory, give you his opinion on the rating of any pitch, repeat anything written in any guidebook, and tell you about the weather that day. He is Director of the American Safe Climbing Association. Between March 2001 and November 2002, Greg spearheaded the replacement of 482 bolts in Red Rocks canyons, including most of the long routes in this guidebook. He and other ASCA volunteers work long and hard to restore deteriorating bolts. Greg lives in Bishop, Yosemite, Tuolumne, Joshua Tree, and Red Rocks and develops SuperTopos for these areas.

Its a good book if you're trad climbing, it has the majority of the routes in it. If you really want to know all the routes and have a ton of information, there are better guide books out there for Red Rocks.

I've got every Red Rocks guide ever published, which is about 10 books, including a really old one published in Rock and Ice around 1982. This guide is not comprehensive but contains a good selection of classic long routes. One thing I enjoyed was the historical information on each route. For example, Triassic Sands has a section on the history of this climb that can't be found anywhere else.However, if you just want to get up these routes you may think all this history is unnecessary. Red Rocks is a difficult area for one guide book as there are such a wide variety of climbs, from single pitch sport routes to multi-pitch sport routes to full day trad affairs. This book does seem to emphasize the latter and if you are more into sport climbing you are probably better off buying one of the comprehensive guides.The photos in this book are superb. The online version, in particular, has some really good shots. I guess they reproduce better on a monitor than on paper.

To all the negative reviewers who complain about route selection: Supertopo guides have *never* been about having a comprehensive route listing. Instead, they are meant to give very detailed route descriptions, which this guide does in spades. I do agree it could use a few more photographs to make it easier to find the start for the various routes. Otherwise, it has never led me astray.

Compared to more recent publications, especially Red Rocks, a Climber's Guide, this book is next to useless. It's out-of-date and access descriptions are minimal causing much confusion and lost time. Getting to the routes quickly is important if you want to climb in the shade.Some of the best areas are not even mentioned. Photos are small and limited. Route descriptions themselves are good as are the line drawings of the routes, but overall coverage is limited.

While the appearence of this guide is attractive and the information accurate it fails by being too selective in the routes it describes.If you're headed to Red Rocks, check out Red Rocks: A Climber's Guide by Jerry Handren and Southern Nevada Bouldering Southern Nevada Bouldering by Tom Moulin. Both have high artistic values and are comprehensive.

This the most useless climbing guide I have ever seen.There are 3 guidebooks available for Red Rocks. The best one one is the new eddition of Mountaineers guide edited by Roxanne Brock, which is a very comrehensive, and gives good route descriptions pitch by pitch. It is similar to 'Falcon' guide; in fact it is a copy of it with much improved topos and graphics. It is also somewhat better organized then 'Falcon' guide and provides stellar guide for each route; very helpful. I definitely recommend it.The only good thing about supertopo guide are actually topos but unfortunately the number of routes described in this book is very limited. I can only guess that the author included only routes he has done, otherwise I cannot understandthe reason of producing the guidebook to a fenomenal climbing area including only 10% routes or so.Second problem with the book is a lack of detailed route descriptions; instead the author decided to suggest strategy of doing the route consisting of a statement such as that the route is very popular and you should start early to be first in line to avoid waiting in the que; I guess this is really difficult to figure out yourself.Third problem with the book is the lack of directions on how to get to the route. OK after few days and after talking to other climbers, who have climbed there for few days, you can get a good orientation but if you don't have anyone to ask for directions, you cannot work-out from this book.The book looks impressive if you never climbed in Red Rocks, but if you did, it is absolutely useless, unless you really want to limit yourself to a small number of routes described in the book.So do yourself a favor and don't waste your money for this particular book; go for Mountaineers guide, it is very good and useful. Besides it is cheaper. I bought this book because it was offered in the electronic form and I could print it out and reap easily pages with topos for the route.And go climbing in Red Rocks, it is really a stellar climbing area.

An ok book. Found one helpful hint. A diet using pellets is not a good plan. I've had two small animal or exotic pet vets tell me greens and Timothy hay only! My rabbits do just fine without those pellets.

Very short on details. Spent way more time talking about the different breed of rabbits aimed at breeders and people show want to show rabbits. Yuck even talks about which rabbits are best for fur coats and meat. If you buy this book to find out about having a rabbit as a pet you probably really don't want to read about the poor rabbits that end up as coats and food. Find a better book about rabbits as pets.

I wish I had found this book back when I first bought a pet rabbit but am SO GLAD I FOUND THIS BOOK. A lot of the other pet rabbit books I’ve ready have been way to simplistic or super-technical but this one offers lots of facts and info. that every bunny parent should know. I read it from start to finish right after I bought it and feel totally comfortable now that I know how to care for my pet rabbit.I also really liked the section on recommended rabbit breeds and the section on litter box training. I have a friend that needs to read the section on “What to do if your rabbit bites” so will be buying a copy of this for her too.This book really helped me to understand my rabbit better and will be a permanent book in my rabbit-knowledge library. It was easy and fun to read, I’ll be looking up the other books by this author!

We have a dwarf Rabbit that has a personality like a person. I recently decided maybe we should research how to take better care of it. Of course it has the best of everything and has even been asking for the new I phone 6. I learned that we immediately need to clip its toenails (Looking forward to that) and why it stomps every time we put it in the hutch for the night. Also, we have been moving it around too much as well as moving the litter box around too much. Now a word from the Rabbit...Thank you Sarah for making my owners much better owners. Maybe now we can sit by the fireplace and I can learn to purr instead of fearing I will soon be dropped in the fire. Did I mention we learned how to hold, carry and handle the animal as well?

Cages with wire bottoms with give your rabbit sore hocks (like blisters all over your foot). How would you like to walk around with your foot covered with blisters on a HARD surface? It wouldn't feel good so that SHOULD NOT EVER be recommended.This book is very short (like 100-120 pages on Kindle) and only took me an hour to read and told you everything about rabbits and just told you the facts and didn't give you like 5 pages of details on how to feed your rabbit which I liked, it said the facts and gave you helpful tips but didn't spout nonsense that everyone would just skip over.I got this book for $5.44 on Kindle and it was definitely worth it and I would totally recommend this book to others seeking basic facts about everything rabbit.
